Boiling River Trail is an interesting must-see and try destination in the Yellowstone National Park. A short 1.25-mile trail will take you to the Boiling River, a place where a large hot spring enters the Gardner River. The cold and hot water mixes here and becomes warm for bathing. Wear your bathing suit and enjoy this remarkable hot spring tub!
Yellowstone’s Boiling River is located in the Mammoth Hot Springs area, approximately 2 miles north from Mammoth.
By the way, swimming in the hot springs and other thermal features is prohibited in the park, Boiling Rives is one of the few legal places where soaking is allowed. Keep in mind that if you want to soak here you need to come at the end of summer or autumn, because Boiling River is closed during spring time and early summer days because of the high water level in the river.
The Boiling River Trail is one of the most popular in the park. It is open from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. This is a well maintained trail and mostly flat. The trail follows the Gardner River, opening wonderful views, and leaning to the area where you can bath and relax a little bit!
If you decide to bath in the river, keep in mind that you need to find the right place where the water mixes, because the water from Gardner River is very cold and the hot spring water is hot. Gardner Rives also has a strong current, watch your kids and don’t allow them to go into the river. Please, also remember that any kinds of soap, food, beverages are prohibited here.
The trail to the Boiling River is very short and may be hiked by the families with kids. But after half a mile, be careful because you will see clear water that will look appealing, but it is very hot. The temperature of water here is 113-140°F. Just continue to a special zone that is protected by rocks and is perfect for bathing.
