River Trail is an extremely easy picturesque trail, especially popular and often visited by families with kids and various age visitors, who are eager to enjoy all the beauty of Smith Rock State Park without climbing the strenuous trails, preferring a pleasant saunter at a leisurely pace.

To find to the River Trail from the parking you need to go down to the Crooked River by The Chute trail, which is quite steep, or by the Canyon Trail, which is longer, but more level and smooth. After crossing the wooden footbridge across the river you should take the left turn to start the River Trail (if you turn right you’ll find the Wolf Tree Trail, and going strait is the Misery Ridge Trail).

And here your Smith Rock adventure will start. Having the sparkling Crooked River twisting through the canyon on your left and beautiful huge rocks and stone walls, consisting mostly of Smith Rock tuff and basalt on your left, don’t forget to keep your eyes wide open not to miss anything.

The first famous climbing spot which you will pass following the River Trail is the Picnic Lunch Wall. Going further you will approach the main area for climbers with many shorter and more narrow trails going to the right from the River Trail and leading to the main climbing destinations such as Christian Brothers, Morning Glory Wall and others.

Do not miss an Asterisk Pass, a huge rock resembling a Snoopy Head, and after it the Smith Rock Group.
Proceeding your stroll along the trail you may see not just water fowl, but also some wild animals, like deer, otters or beavers.

Soon you will see the connection of the River Trail and the Mesa Verde Trail which will give you more options for further explorations of Smith Rock State Park.
