Located on the Oregon Coast Tillamook Rock Lighthouse has a frightening reputation. This legendary construction is a mile and a quarter offshore. It took over 500 days to complete this almost impossible task. In January of 1881, it was officially lit and has been in service for more than 75 years. But its building was really challenging. People were fighting with violent forces of nature.

Tillamook Rock Lighthouse keeps lots of myths and secrets. There are numerous books and documentaries about this isolated building. It was nicknamed as “Terrible Tilly” because of the dangerous weather conditions for both builders and lighthouse keepers. People who built the lighthouse were familiar with all the dangers and they had a great experience in that type of construction.

But sometimes the weather can be unpredictable. Severe storms spared neither the rock nor human lives. There were victims even before the construction began. Master mason John Trewavas, highly skilled lighthouse builder tried to land on the rock when he was washed off it by strong ocean swells and was never seen again.

Huge storms and waves battered the rock all the time. It was a real undertaking to transfer people back and forth during the building process. The main function of the lighthouse was to help guide sailors around Tillamook Head. It was one of the difficult lighthouses to attend and equip. In 1934 the lighthouse was nearly destroyed by the powerful storm. The large waves of the Pacific Ocean crashed into the building, shattered the Fresnel lens and flooded rooms.
In 1957, the lighthouse was decommissioned and a few years later sold to private owners. For some period of time, it was turned into the columbarium but later it lost its license.

Tillamook Lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The only way to see “Terrible Tilly” up close today is by helicopter or boat. But people are not allowed to land on the rock in order not to disturb its inhabitants. The lighthouse can be also seen from trails of Ecola State Park and the coastal cities of Cannon Beach and Seaside. Being a part of Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge this small rocky island became the home for sea lions and seals. The rock provides a nesting habitat for maritime birds of all kinds. This is a great place to see wonderful creatures in their natural settings.

This area has a storied past. Lots of people come to the Oregon Coast to admire spectacular views of “Terrible Tilly” standing lonely 133 feet above sea level.
