But let’s talk a little about the destination. Our filmmakers Roman and Mykhailo are on their way to the Columbia River Gorge. One of the most fascinating aspects of this is its unique geological history. The gorge was formed during the last Ice Age, around 15,000 years ago, by cataclysmic floods known as the Missoula Floods.

During this period, a massive ice dam repeatedly blocked the Clark Fork River in present-day Montana, forming a huge glacial lake called Lake Missoula. When the ice dam eventually gave way, the tremendous force unleashed a deluge of water, estimated to be ten times the flow of all the rivers in the world combined. This surged across eastern Washington and down the Columbia River Gorge.

These colossal floods, occurring over hundreds of years, carved out the spectacular landscape of the Columbia River Gorge as we see it today. The sheer power of these floods transformed the region, sculpting deep canyons, gouging out valleys, and leaving behind vast layers of sediment, ultimately shaping the remarkable features we admire today.
