The allure of fishing draws in those seeking a quiet angling experience, though the rocky shoreline, towering cliffs, and formidable currents advise against swimming. The park reveals an ancient connection through a hiking trail that follows the historic Hawaiian coastal path known as “the King’s Highway,” unveiling breathtaking vistas and passing by the entrances of lava tubes. A remarkable facet of this recreational area is its expansive grove of ironwood trees, planted in the 1930s by ranger Albert J. MacKenzie, whose memory lives on through the park’s namesake. Intriguingly, the park is a vital part of the Malama Ki Forest Reserve, contributing to the preservation of Hawaii’s natural heritage.
