The Smith River, flowing through Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, is steeped in both natural and cultural history. Designated as one of the last wild rivers in California, the Smith River is notable for its extraordinary clarity and vibrant emerald hue, which are the result of its pristine watershed protected from urban development. This river has long been a vital resource for local Indigenous tribes, including the Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation, who have historically relied on its abundance of fish and other resources.

In addition to its ecological significance, the region surrounding the Smith River has a rich tapestry of history. This area was first explored by European settlers in the mid-19th century, during the period of westward expansion, when the beauty of the redwoods began attracting loggers and tourists alike. One of the park’s namesakes, Jedediah Smith, was an early mountain man and explorer who ventured into northern California in the 1820s. His adventures contributed to the mapping and understanding of this rugged landscape.

The video was filmed by our filmmaker Roman Khomlyak, who traveled to California in the summer of 2023 to capture the beauty of the redwoods. He explored Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park and was drawn to the clear waters of the Smith River. He captured the moment using his Panasonic GH6 camera, showcasing the river’s peaceful atmosphere. This amazing soundscape video also features the calming sounds of the flowing water, inviting viewers to relax and enjoy the park’s serenity.
