Redwood trees have been around for at least 20 million years, but their survival hinged on a group of dedicated people in the 20th century.

Imagine this – almost 90% of the original redwood forests were logged by the 1960s! Thankfully, a non-profit called the Save the Redwoods League, founded in 1918, stepped in. Through donations and matching funds, they managed to buy over 100,000 acres of redwood forest between 1920 and 1960. Their efforts, along with advocacy from groups like the Sierra Club, ultimately led to the creation of Redwood National Park in 1968. Today, these parks protect nearly half of the remaining old-growth coast redwoods.
