A massive landslide removed its northern flank, followed by a lateral blast, reshaping the peak and creating a massive crater. The eruption spewed ash and steam over 15 miles into the atmosphere, devastating over 230 square miles of forest, claiming 57 lives, and causing extensive damage to the area. Despite the tragedy, it provided valuable scientific insights and stands as a reminder of nature’s raw power and the need for preparedness.
