We have already lifted the curtain on the January 2023 eruption. But this volcano has a long and plentiful history of its own. The first recorded eruption of the Kilauea volcano dates back to 1823. However, it is important to note that Kilauea has been an active volcano for much longer, with a history of eruptions that extends far beyond the scope of recorded human history. Hawaiian oral traditions and geological evidence indicate that Kilauea has been erupting for hundreds of thousands of years. The volcano’s ongoing activity and frequent eruptions have contributed to the formation and growth of the Big Island of Hawaii over time.

For example, in 2018, the eruption of Kilauea had a profound impact on the surrounding area. The lava flows extended their destructive reach, covering residential communities, displacing residents, and destroying homes and infrastructure. The destruction spread over a distance of approximately 13.7 miles. The eruption caused significant disruptions, both in terms of human lives and the natural environment.

Since then, K?lauea has continued to exhibit volcanic activity, albeit at varying intensities. The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory has been closely monitoring the volcano, providing valuable insights and early warnings to mitigate potential risks. Scientists and geologists work tirelessly to better understand the volcano’s behavior and predict its future eruptions.

Our filmmaker Roman Khomlyak took the opportunity to film a real volcanic eruption and share his impressions with you. By finding a great point from where to get a perfect view of the lava lake – K?pina?i Pali, a portion of Crater Rim Trail– Roman created a real high-quality masterpiece, didn’t he?
