The Vanishing Road: The Kapoho portion of the road has actually been engulfed by lava flows! Thanks to ongoing volcanic activity on the Big Island, particularly from Kilauea, sections of the road have been consumed by new lava fields over time. This serves as a powerful reminder of nature’s might and how volcanic forces are constantly transforming the Hawaiian terrain.

The Endearing Moniker: Originally constructed with red cinders, giving it a distinctively “red” appearance, the Kalapana-Kapoho Beach Road is now predominantly made of black asphalt. However, locals still fondly refer to it as the “Red Road.” This nickname pays homage to the road’s past and adds a dash of local charm.
