Mauna Kea, the “White Mountain,” an inactive volcano on Hawaii, the largest and southernmost island in the Hawaiian archipelago, rises dramatically 32,000 ft from the ocean floor to its summit at 13,796 ft above sea level. Hosting the world’s largest astronomical observatory, Mauna Kea’s telescopes, operated by astronomers from eleven countries, possess a combined light-gathering power fifteen times greater than the former largest Palomar telescope in California and sixty times greater than the Hubble Space Telescope, establishing it as a pivotal hub for exploring the mysteries of the cosmos.

“Finding yourself in a snow-covered landscape on a tropical island is quite interesting!” says our filmmaker Roman Khomlyak. “By the way, we learned that from here, from Mauna Kea, snow is lowered down in large wheelbarrows to surprise tourists, make snowmen, etc.” Another fact to consider is that if you have any health problems, there is no need to go up this road. “Blood pressure may rise, headaches and ears may hurt due to elevation changes,” he adds.
